2 Corinthians 5:17 ‘Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new’.

Identity is the distinctive characteristic belonging to any given individual, or shared by members of a particular group. This means you and I are distinct because of our brand new life and identity in Christ.

It is pertinent we have a deep understanding of our new identity in Christ. A man who doesn’t know who he is will not know who he is not. If a man doesn’t know his name, he can as well respond to any name that is uttered.

So that if anyone is in (Christ) the Anointed, he is a new creation: the old is gone, see all things have become new. Our new identity in Christ must be visible for all to see. If anyone is in the Anointed: You are in the burden remover and yoke destroyer! Hallelujah.

As a child of God, sin cannot have dominion over you because you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, you cannot be sick because you are the healed of God. You cannot be financially broke because you have all things that pertain to life and godliness, you cannot die because you are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. Depression is far from you because the work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.

Who you are will determine your position on circumstances around you.  You are a brand new person in Christ.

Factors that shape Identity

Culture and Tradition:

Matthew 15:1-3 – ‘1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Our culture and traditional belief system have a way of shaping ones identity. A lot of people are trapped in long standing family traditions which are not in line with the Word of God and hence tend to forfeit who they are in order to please others. Remember trying to please others will mean one would end up displeasing ones true self. In Africa, some traditional rites include making some sacrifices to some family gods, but our new identity does not permit us because we are dead to all forms of manipulation of the devil. Some others around the world are trapped in a vicious cycle of religious traditions that is not in line with the Word of God. Let’s beware of little foxes that spoil the vine.

Language :

Colossians 4:6‘Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one’.

What you say, how you say and when you say! Now that we have a new identity, the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart should be acceptable in His sight. We just can’t say things because of our emotional state, our language should be censored. Different countries have their official language of communication; in France it’s French; In the United Kingdom, it’s English; in Portugal, it’s Portuguese; In Christ, it is the Language of grace, that of the Spirit. Our words should edify, exhort and comfort.

Galatians 3:28‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

The scriptures declare there is no gender in the spirit. So your temperament is now a spirit controlled temperament. Our dependency is on God. Genesis 1:28; And God blessed them, and God said to them…..’ Your gender is not a disadvantage because you have all things that pertain to life and godliness.

Family and Friends:

Psalm 133:1‘Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!’We spend the most of our time with our family, friends, colleagues and brethren. Who they are has a way of influencing our way of life and outlook. Hence, family traits and inherent attitude that is not in line with the will of God should not have dominion over us. We need to spend time getting to know more about who we are. We have a brand new life in Christ!
