The value of obedience and who to obey – Part 1

Job 22:21-30 – “Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you. Receive, please, instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart. If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up; you will remove iniquity far from your tents. Then you will lay your gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. Yes, the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver; for then you will have your delight in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God. You will make your prayer to Him, He will hear you, and you will pay your vows. You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways. When they cast you down, and you say, ‘Exaltation will come!’ Then He will save the humble person. He will even deliver one who is not innocent; yes, he will be delivered by the purity of your hands.”

Psalm 138:2 – I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

From the above scripture in Psalm 138:2, we can see that God Himself place high value on the word by magnifying it above His Name. This implies that God Himself is obedient to the word. He is an obedient God. The bible indicates that God will never break His word. So He has held Himself accountable to the standard He requires of us. The more obedient you are to God the more Godly you become and the more Godly you become the more effective and productive you become. In other words, our level of productivity in life is directly proportionate to our level of obedience to God’s word. So you are the main determinant of your value in life.

Who to obey –

Obey God through His word

Friends, true obedience starts when we choose and begin to carry out God’s instruction given to us through His word. I always tell people that “your obedience to the written word is what will determine your response to the spoken word”. Obedience to any other person or instruction is secondary to obedience to God’s word. True obedience is doing things because God’s word says so not because you like it or not. True happiness comes from doing God’s word.

Your Pastor/Mentor –

God is not the author of confusion and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is order. God sets up a set man/woman in the house as a role model for people to follow. God raised Moses for the people of Israel to follow in order to come out of Egypt. He raised up Samuel for the people to follow into God’s presence at Shiloh. God raised James in the early church for the early Christians to follow into the destiny of the Body of Christ for that period.

You can see that the role model principle has always been God’s method of taking His people from one point to another. Taking and obeying instruction from your man of God positions you for the blessings of God for you. As he gives you what he has received from the Lord and you in turn obey the word, it puts you in the place of blessing. Obedience to God’s representative is obedience to God Himself. if you cannot obey the authority you see how can you obey the authority that you cannot see?

Your Parents

God demands all of us to obey our parents. It is the first commandment with a promise of blessing in it. If your parents don’t know God or they have not treated you right please pray for them. That way God sees that you have done your part. You may be wondering what about parents that are abusive? I will advise you to get help through proper channel like discussing with your pastor. Parents, you should be considerate and be examples to your children. Be a role model to your children and keep yourself accountable to the standard that you set.

Your spouse

Successful marriage is a product of work, cooperation and compromise between two people. The Husband and wife are to listen to each other and agree on steps to take. The path of obedience is never one sided. The husband is not always right and the wife is not always wrong or vice verse. Marriage is a team effort and not a single effort. Obeying and keeping to one anothers instruction is a discipline that must be adopted in every marriage so that the blessing of God may rest on the marriage. Failure in this area leads to the devil taking advantage of you and your spouse, so be wise.
