2 Corinthians 5:21
“For him who did not know sin, on our behalf He did make sin that we may become the righteousness of God in him.” (Young’s Translation).
For a long time one of the most misrepresented and misunderstood subjects is that of righteousness. From my observation there are two types of righteousness – Moral and Spiritual righteousness.
Moral righteousness consists of what we were taught as right in our homes, society, culture etc. And if and when we abide by them the world around us deem us decent, law abiding and persons of high moral standard. This moral standard includes religiosity and acts of piety. All these are right but they are not the same as spiritual righteousness. The moral type of righteousness is attained by works and personal merit. But the bible says, ‘All our righteousness are as filthy rags’ Isaiah 64:6.
Spiritual righteousness is a gift we are to receive through Christ. When we gave our lives to Christ we exchanged positions, He took our place and we took His. He became sin for us and we became the righteousness of God. Remember through Adam we all became sinners and we all fell even though we were not in the garden and we didn’t eat the forbidden fruit. But in Adam we all sinned and we all fell because he was the first man, (first Adam) he represented all that would come after Him. In like manner though we did not suffer, we were not on the cross, we did not go into the tomb and rise from the dead, Jesus Christ actually did. But He, Christ (Second Adam) represented us and in Him we gained righteousness and blessing as we had gained sin and curses through the first Adam.
This type of righteousness puts you in the class of God because it qualifies you to be seated with Christ in heavenly places. Your feelings of unworthiness have nothing to do with it. Your so called weakness will fade away at the revelation of your new nature. When I discovered this, I began to call myself the righteousness of God because that’s really who I am in Christ.
As I began to see myself in this light I began to lose appetite for sin and carry myself in a new light. What I used to fall for because of wrong teaching and understanding I began to resist and overcome. Please note you are no longer a sinner looking for mercy or forgiveness. You are the righteousness of God that the devil is trying to stain with sin. The devil is trying to lure you back into your old ways but the new way of life is superior.
Start invoking your new nature by meditating on it, believing it and consistently professing it. From now on anytime you make a mistake do not run away from God or church but run to God, collect forgiveness and continue your life of righteousness. This is the secret of exaltation, oh I pray you get this and you will rise cheaply to great heights. Righteousness in Christ is not to be worked for it is to be received as a gift in Christ. You are the righteousness of God in Christ!
