Steps to a life of Excellence – 2

The second step in walking in excellence is singleness of purpose.

Philippians 3:13 This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

To be single minded is to be focused and immovable. Broken focus leads to failure. You cannot be a Jack of all trades. You cannot be involved in every kind of business; even if you are multi-gifted, one of the gifts will stand out above the rest. So you have to make up your mind to focus on that gift, ability or calling in your life that will enable you to meet the needs of more people in more places.

Your single purpose should be to meet needs and not to get rewards. This is where many people get it wrong in life; their first question mostly is what is in it for me? How much can I get from it? While this is valid it is not the primary question, the primary question should be how much can I contribute to make things better than the way I met it? Then you can go on to ask how will it improve my gift and what do I stand to learn from this to be able to be a better person and a blessing to my generation? This brings to mind the famous statement of the former President of the United States J.F. Kennedy, “ask not what your country will do for you but what you will do for your country.” Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. So your single most important purpose should be to meet needs with your gifts, expertise, knowledge, ministry etc.
