Introduction to faith – What is faith?

Hebrews 11:1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

For the next few days we will be exploring the meaning and the workings of faith. Faith is ‘pistis’ in Greek meaning conviction, assurance, to be persuaded, belief.

There are two types of faith that are operated on earth. They are the human-sense faith and Divine-God kind of faith. The human faith is based on our five senses. It includes the sense of taste with the tongue, the sense of feeling with the skin, the sense of smelling with the nose, the sense of hearing with our ears and the sense of seeing with our eyes. While these are special and important organs that enable us to function in the physical world and produce results, they are limited to the physical realm and operate solely on physical evidence. They cannot solve spiritual problems; they are limited in this regard. This is where the Divine-God kind of faith comes in. According to Roman 12:3, the measure of the God kind of faith is given to every Christian by God. Therefore the seed of the God kind of faith is sown by God into every Christian. In other words, it is a gift that needs to be nurtured to maturity in order to maximise its potential.

Human faith is based on physical evidence; divine faith is based on God imparting it in our spirit when you made Jesus the Lord of your life. Divine faith is always a gift from God, and never something that can be produced by people. In short, the origin for the believer’s faith is “God’s divine persuasion” (Revelation). The Lord continuously births faith in the yielded believer so they can know what He prefers, i.e. the persuasion of His will. Divine faith is God’s warranty, certifying that the revelation He birthed in our hearts will come to pass.

The physical realm is an offspring of the spiritual. Without the spiritual, there will be no physical. The spiritual existed before the physical. The spiritual can exist without the physical but the physical cannot exist without the spiritual. Remember God the creator of the physical realm is a spirit. Divine faith transcends and is superior to the human faith. Whereas the human faith is limited to the physical realm, the spiritual faith is unlimited. It operates both in and through the physical realm and spiritual realm. That is why Jesus could cure incurable diseases. That is why God, through our faith in Him, brings us out of physically impossible situations.

Please note that, I am not saying you should not use your physical senses to solve your problems when possible. God created the physical senses to help us navigate the physical realm. However, when the challenges you are facing defy physical solution or you just prefer spiritual intervention for one reason or another, then you can switch from the physical faith to spiritual faith. In operating both physical and divine faith you need proper information. For the development of physical faith you need information on the issues of concern and case studies and scenario. Our educational system is based on this system of thinking. To grow your divine faith you need information from scriptures on a constant basis. Constant study and meditation on scriptures result in development of strong faith. It also enables the faith believer to see life from a ‘possibility’ perspective and motivate him to take actions that will result in staggering success.

God expects every Christian to operate both the human faith and divine faith on a daily basis. While they are both different, they need mastering and using to their full capacity. Because we live in a physical world and have concentrated our energy more in the physical realm our human faith seems to be more developed than our divine faith. And as a result we always have a conflict. The cure to this is to make a decision of quality and conclude that the human faith is based on physical factors that can change in a second. However, the divine faith is based on God, who cannot change. So whenever your human faith conflicts with your divine faith, stick with your divine faith and spend more time developing it by studying, meditating and confessing God’s word until the voice of your physical faith is put under control.

When you act on God’s word based on the conviction you received from His word then you are walking in divine faith.
