To whom are we accountable?
Romans 14:10b & 12,
“For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”
2 Timothy 2:4, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
All through scripture it has been made clear that we shall give account of ourselves to God and most people would agree to that. But where there have been differences in thinking is in the area of giving account to men. Some are of the opinion that as long as they are fine before God their account with men doesn’t matter. Therefore, they care less of what men think of them regarding how they handle the resources committed to their trust.
God is the one that has put men over us either in the church, office, business, government etc. and He is aware that some of these people are not following some of the patterns laid down in His word. But it is not our duty to do God’s job by sorting out the discrepancies by revolting against authorities or becoming unaccountable. The Bible says God will judge the quick and the dead, so leave the judgment to God. Give a good account of yourself anyway regardless of what others do.
Where shall we account?
We shall give account of ourselves both here on earth and in heaven. From the story about the prodigal son in Luke 16:23-25, It is important to note that it is not a parable but an actual occurrence. The boy was held accountable here on earth and thank God he came to himself.
In some cases we give account of our actions and reap its consequences on earth; for example if you are not financially accountable you will soon become broke, busted and disgusted. On the other hand the ultimate consequence of not accepting Jesus would be accounted for before God in heaven.
What things do we account for?
- Our life – spirit, soul and body;
- Gifts, calling, position and privileges;
- The words we speak to ourselves and others;
- The word of God we hear, what we do with it;
- Money, physical blessings;
- How you treat your man of God; and
- Family
These are only some of the things we are to account for both here and now and at the judgement seat of Christ. This is not meant to stir up condemnation but to start the fire of preparation for promotion and the shift to the next level.
